Introduction / History

The Hannali are a distinct people group reported only in Sri Lanka. They are closely connected to the Sinhalese majority, sharing language and cultural patterns, yet they retain their own identity within the broader social fabric. Historically, the Hannali have lived in the central and southern regions of the island, shaped by centuries of Buddhist influence and the rhythms of agrarian life. Their traditions reflect both the island's ancient heritage and the pressures of modern change, as Sri Lanka has endured colonial rule, civil conflict, and economic transitions that have affected all its communities.

What Are Their Lives Like?

The Hannali live in villages and towns where agriculture, small trade, and labor provide the foundation of daily life. Rice cultivation, tea plantations, and local crafts are common sources of income. Family life is central, with extended households often sharing responsibilities across generations.

Celebrations revolve around Buddhist festivals such as Vesak, which commemorates the birth, enlightenment, and death of the Buddha, as well as harvest-related rituals. Food is a vital part of their culture, with rice and curry forming the staple diet, often flavored with coconut, chili, and spices unique to Sri Lankan cuisine. Hospitality is highly valued, and meals are often shared communally, reinforcing bonds of kinship and friendship.

What Are Their Beliefs?

The Hannali are predominantly Buddhist, with a small Christian presence. Buddhism shapes their worldview, emphasizing karma, rebirth, and devotion to the teachings of the Buddha. Temples serve as centers of worship, education, and community life. Religious practices include offering flowers, lighting lamps, and chanting scriptures.

While Christianity is present among the Hannali, they are a long way from having a movement to Christ.

What Are Their Needs?

The Hannali face both spiritual and physical challenges. Spiritually, they need exposure to the good news of Jesus Christ in ways that connect with their cultural context. Many have never heard the gospel explained clearly, and there is little access to Christian fellowship within their communities.

Physically, the Hannali experience the struggles common in Sri Lanka. Economic instability, limited opportunities for youth, and the lingering effects of past conflicts. Families often strive to balance tradition with modern pressures, and many long for hope and stability in uncertain times.

Prayer Items

Pray that the Hannali will encounter the message of Jesus Christ through personal relationships, media, and faithful witness.
Pray asking God to raise up believers within Sri Lanka who will see themselves as part of the mission force, bringing light to unreached groups.
Pray for peace and stability in their communities and for economic opportunities that allow families to thrive.
Pray for the small number of Christians among them, that they would be strengthened in faith and boldness, becoming salt and light in Hannali villages.
Pray that the Hannali will discover the blessing of Christ, who offers answers to life's deepest issues.
